Fuel Efficient Formula
AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil efficiently transfers energy from the engine to the drivetrain. Its low coefficient of friction inhibits the energy loss to "drag" common to high viscosity oils.

Important*** Motorists seeking the ultimate in fuel efficiency may use AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil in place of higher viscosity motor oils.

Ask your Amsoil questions here. Save this page to your favorites, and come back in a few days for the answer. Synthetic engine oil is often misunderstood and commented on by people who are not in any way experts. It's just like when people who got sick after a flu shot tend to believe the flu shot caused it,. It's usually the case they had a cold coming on when the shot was given. Synthetic motor oil will never cause a problem with your engine. If you have heard it might, or want to know about viscosity, warrantees, or other related topics, submit this form, and your answer will be published.

Please be advised only serious questions will be answered, and any form containing vulgarity will never reach the site owner.

Please don't ask me to compare Amsoil to other brands. Please click "why Amsoil", then "independent testing"(above) to research. The answers are to long to discuss here. There are no automated postings. Questions from U.S.A. and Canada only please.

Q: Andy H. from Ohio:

Dear Dan,

I've heard that you can't switch back to regular oil once you switch to synthetic oil.

A: You can at any time. Amsoil products are manufactured to mix without any side effects. Sometimes people in an emergency will need to add a couple quarts of conventional oil to their crank case. This is perfectly ok. Just remember that the conventional oil you add is only as good as the manufacturer states. Your oil should then be changed at the recommended interval from the time you added the conventional oil.  If you are taking advantage of Amsoil's extended drain intervals, keep an extra quart or two in your car.

Q: James M. from North Carolina writes.

I have a 2 stage compressor, and the manufacturer suggests in the owners manual that after the first 50 hours I should switch over to "Non-Detergent Synthetic 30 Wt. Oil " ... Non-detergent would seem to me to allow for deposit build-ups and sludge. Do you have a Non-Detergent synthetic? - have any idea why a non-d is suggested?

A: James,

Compressors have no contact with combustion gasses which produce deposits and sludge therefore do not need detergents, which can build up on the vales used in compressors. Non detergent oil is recommended by most compressor manufacturers. We do have a product for you. You can read up on non detergent synthetic oil here.

Q: Ed C. from Ohio writes.

What is synthetic oil made from?

A: Ed,

Amsoil synthetic oil is made in a laboratory. Rather than using crude oil which contains a mixture of  hydrocarbons, synthetic base stocks are made up of three substances containing tem carbon molecules each. This substance is called polyalphaolefin (PAO). The finest additives are then added to Amsoil lubricants The resulting oil has better stability, heat resistance, lubrication, and other capabilities. That's the short explanation.

Q: Fred M. from Saskatchewan writes.

I'm thinking about switching over to synthetic motor oil but I've heard that there is a special filter you must get to get the to get the full effects of the oil. Is this true?

A: Fred, You will get the full effects from your synthetic motor oil with any filter, BUT... Amsoil Ea filters for instance will filter out submicron size particles, flow better, and hold more contaminants than an ordinary filter. The Ea oil filters can be changed every 25,000 miles. Change ordinary filters as the manufacturer dictates. Either way you can take full advantage of the benefits of your synthetic lubricants. It just makes better sense to upgrade your filter at the same time you upgrade your oil.

Q: Andy F. from Virginia writes. Do you have or will you have a mercon sp synthetic, or equivalent in the near future? Ford only recommends mercon sp for their new transmission.

A: Andy,

Amsoil manufactures ATF synthetic automatic transmission fluid. It is designed to replace most transmission fluids. It is time tested and proven, and outperforms mercon. You can read about our ATF oil here.

Q: Nathan M. from Michigan writes:

I have a 98 Dodge Caravan with 130670 miles on it. The van has a slight knocking sound. What synthetic oil should I use and would it be a benefit?  I also have a high performance boat with a 502/550hp that has about 100 hours on it that I use a 40 weight motor oil in. Can I use a synthetic oil in it and which oil should I use?

A: Nathan,

If the knocking isn't octane related, a synthetic oil may very well help. I've heard many good reports on this subject. If you have been changing your oil regularly, then your seals should be in good shape. I recommend 0W-30 synthetic motor oil. If you think the seals are in bad shape, or there are already leaks, try 20W-50 synthetic oil. As for the marine engine, assuming it is gasoline powered, try the high performance 10W-40

Q: Curtis W. from Arizona writes:

Does the 0w-30 synthetic oil have good cold start oil film protection? I know PAO base oils do not cling to metal as well as petroleum products do.

A: Curtis,

Amsoil 0w-30 synthetic motoroil flows immediately to your engine parts even in winter. This is why it is the best choice for a motor oil in cold weather. While your petroleum oils are thickened in cold weather, our 0w-30 remains fluid making cold cranking easier, and starting faster. Film strength refers to a lubricants ability to withstand speed and temperature extremes. All Amsoil products excel in this area far beyond petroleum based oils.

Q: Harold N. from Florida writes:

I have a Chevy Camaro 1999 with 90,000 miles and I would like to know if I can switch to syntheticoil and which viscosity you recommend me?, now I am using regular 10w30.

A: Harold,

Yes, you can and should switch to synthetic oil now. Any 30 weight oil would do just fine. I recommend the 5W-30 for either the six cylinder, or the eight cylinder. It's what I use in My Hummer H3. You might want to read this article about 5W-30 or 10W-30. You will see that the synthetic 10W-30 oil is also an excellent choice.

Q: Aubrey from NM. wites.

Are synthetic oils good for diesel motors, transmissions and rearends. I have a 2001 1-ton diesel dodge truck with 72,000 miles - would it hurt to change to synthetic oils.

A: Aubrey,

72,000 miles is young for a diesel. It's certainly a good time to change over to synthetic. Amsoil has excellent synthetic diesel oil, ATF, transmission, and gear lube. Amsoil sells a lot of product to diesel owners, and they keep coming back.
