What synthetic oil is made from: Before understanding what a PAO is or how it is developed, the first concept to keep in mind is that it is derived from chemical processes, or better termed “synthetic”. It does not come from the processes used to refine petroleum-based oils. It is totally different. PAO composition is a series of chemical processes that are designed to provide superior lubrication performance over a wide temperature operating range. They are synthetic hydrocarbons manufactured by a two-step process from linear alpha-olefins produced from ethylene. The first step in the synthesis is an oligomerization reaction, essentially polymerization, with boron trifluoride in combination with a protic co-catalyst. They are manufactured via Ziegler-Natta catalysts; usually alkylaluminum compounds in conjunction with organic halides. The second step is hydrogenation of the unsaturated oligomer to enhance the chemical inertness and oxidative stability. This is generally using a metal catalyst such as nickel or palladium to react with the oligomer. Distillation of the reaction mass can be done to cut the PAO before or after hydrogenation. The advantage of this process is that PAO fluids can be tailor-made based on reaction methods and variables such as temperature, time, catalyst type, distillation process, and chain length of olefin material. Most PAOs are derived from 1-decene to provide the broadest range of temperature and performance. As you can see, there is nothing at all related to a petroleum-based source outside of ethylene, however, it no longer retains any molecular similarity to itself once the catalytic process occur.Your chance to save money on fuel, repairs, oil changes and vehicle replacements is right here, right now.
